II. Jet Set Willy (JSW48)

A. New games using Matthew Smith's original Jet Set Willy game engine for the 48K Spectrum and its modifications

10. Willy's New Hat

Author: Unknown

Year: Probably 1985

Language: English

The author and exact date of creation of this game are unknown, although snapshots of the game have been around on the Internet since mid-1990s.

The game features no guardians. It is very linear and it is only "Maria-completable" by design - it was clearly the author's intention to send the player to a special ending room rather than make it bed-completable.

SNA and Z80 snapshots of the game feature a 5-way trainer menu (offering normal mode, immortality, harmless monsters, "no falling" and "no monsters") which applies erroneous POKEs that make the game incompletable. Andrew Broad discussed the problem on his website, where he also offered POKEs to fix it. However, the TZX version which became available on TZX Vault after its February 2007 update does not suffer from the above problem (and does not feature the trainer menu either).

Number of edited rooms: 38

Number of rooms accessible without cheating: 38

(Rooms [39-60] are unedited rooms from the original JSW; the same goes for room [29], where most of the guardian sprites are changed though. These rooms can be reached using the Writetyper cheat, but evidently they are not meant to be a part of the game.)

Number of rooms which need to be visited to complete the game: 36

("Wrong Way  STUPID !" [12] and "Bottomless Pit Of Nothingness" [00] should be omitted as entering them results in a multiple-death scenario.)

Number of items to collect: 83

Bugfix needed after original release? POSSIBLY

It is not clear whether or not the TZX version available on TZX Vault since 2007 is the original release (in which case that release would have been completable), or whether the SNA and Z80 snapshots which had been around on the internet long before reflect the original release (in which case a bugfix would have been needed).

Completable version available? YES

Spare lives at the start: 7

Completable without loss of life? YES (Maria-completable only)

(The game is not bed- or toilet-completable, because - by conscious design - after passing through an entrance previously blocked by "Maria" [in this case, the word "TOLL"], the player can only go up, ending up in the room "CONGRATULATIONS" [38], from which there is no exit to other rooms, while it is impossible to trigger the toilet run.)

Starting time: 7:00 am

Best documented completion time with no unnecessary loss of life: 8:00 am
