Jet Set Willy: The Lord of the Rings was released by Andrew Broad as part of a box set, together with Manic Miner: The Hobbit. It is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel The Lord of the Rings. In most rooms the player plays as Frodo Baggins, a hobbit whose task is to unmake the One Ring that was made by the dark lord Sauron. This he must do by casting the Ring into the fires in which it was forged, in Mount Doom in the land of Mordor. Frodo is the main character, but in some of the later rooms the player also gets to play other characters.
Andrew noticed that The Lord of the Rings maps quite nicely to JSW, as the former has 62 chapters and the latter has 64 rooms. Consequently, there is a room in the game for each chapter in the book, plus a bonus room.
Jet Set Willy: The Lord of the Rings was gamma-released in January 2000. The game was reissued three more times due to changes in the text documents which accompany it (the last time in February 2005). The TAP file remained completely unchanged since the original release, though.
