II. Jet Set Willy (JSW48)

C. Artistic modifications of the original Jet Set Willy

5. KEYWORDS

Authors: Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans (JODI)

Year: 2004

Language: English

KEYWORDS is one of JODI's artistic Jet Set Willy Variations. It shows maze-like screens across which the protagonist moves as an evolving black square (at times just becoming a black dot or a couple of joint dots). There are no guardians in the game.

Only one version of KEYWORDS seems to be currently available on the web, bearing a time stamp of March 2004. It can be retrieved from the older versions of JODI's download of Jet Set Willy Variations via the Wayback Machine (e.g. using the earliest available saved download). The current set of variations hosted on JODI's website does not include any file of this project.

In further analysis, the title KEYWORDS will be spelled in all capital letters, corresponding to the current spelling of similar titles on JODI's website.

KEYWORDS is meant to be a work of art. It is playable, but apparently it was not its authors' intention that it should be played like a typical game, with the aim of actually completing it. The game is not toilet-completable by design, because Maria (or rather, the blank sprite thereof) is in room 61, inaccessible in the game. The code which checks if Willy is in the Master Bedroom has been modified accordingly (a value of #3D at #9538 points to room 61 being the Master Bedroom). Consequently, even if all items were collected, it would not be possible to trigger the toilet run (an invisible, blank sprite of the toilet is in room 33). This means that the game is not toilet-, bed- or Maria-completable.

The game should probably be item-completable, but there is a critical bug in the room "Number key (C)CAPS LOCK then" (56). There are 30 items to collect altogether in the game. Each of them is located in a different room and each one is placed in the lower left-hand corner of the room. In 29 rooms, the items are located on Water cells, which have black INK (and white PAPER). These items get auto-collected as soon as the protagonist enters the room, because the routine starting at #93D1 has been modified at #93F0 (from #07 to #00), so that it collects any item that is drawn on a cell with black INK (rather than white INK, as in the original JSW). In "Number key (C)CAPS LOCK then" the item is located on an Air cell and consequently cannot be collected. The bug can be fixed by changing the value of address #F878 from #11 to #51, which puts a Water cell below the item and allows the player to collect it.

A fixed, item-completable version of KEYWORDS is available for download below as a JSW Central Special. The information below refer to this version.
