V. Jet Set Willy 64 (JSW64)

Games using John Elliott's JSW64 family of game engines for the 128K Spectrum

2. JSW64: Manic Miner

Author: John Elliott

Year: 2005 (Version 0.01 Hacklevel 11)

Latest revision: 2005 (Version 0.01 Hacklevel 11a)

Language: English

JSW64: Manic Miner was the second JSW64 game released by John Elliott. Its development was parallel to the development of the JSW64 game engine (starting with a beta release in May 2004, with the first "Release Candidate" made public in August of the same year).

In February 2005 John Elliott declared JSW64: Manic Miner v. 0.01 Hacklevel 11 to be gamma-released, and in April 2005 he provided an installer to create the game files. JSW64: Manic Miner v. 0.01 Hacklevel 11a was launched in July 2005 when a bug-fixed DOS installer was released by John Elliott.

Two versions of the game can be created using the installer: one using variant W of the JSW64 game engine, the other using variant Z. Both files play identically. Variant W allows the game to be expanded (should someone want to edit it further) to have 128 rooms, and variant Z - to have 64 rooms (with additional features).

The game contains only the rooms from the original MM and plays almost exactly like the original. A visible difference is e.g. the ability, in some circumstances, to jump over the horizontal guardian at the floor level in "Amoebatrons' Revenge" the first time it comes Willy's way after the player entered the room.

The information below is the same for both variants.

Number of edited rooms: 20

Number of rooms accessible without cheating: 20

(The game plays just like the original MM, so the player cannot wander around freely, but can only enter the next room after completing the current one.)

Number of items to collect: 85

(In order to complete one set of caverns; the player can continue to play and complete many sets of caverns, thus collecting more items.)

Spare lives at the start: 2

Bonus lives awarded: NO

Completable without loss of life? YES (MM-style completable)

(The game plays just like the original MM. Therefore, it does not have Maria, the bed or the toilet. The game can be considered completed after the player has reached the swordfish sign in "The Final Barrier" [019] - an equivalent of reaching the toilet in JSW, which also causes the player to re-enter "Central Cavern" [000]. At this point, the player will have collected 85 items. Of course, the player can then go on and continue to collect items in the second and the following sets of caverns.)

Starting time: 7:00 am

Best documented completion time (reaching the swordfish sign): 7:35 am
