Jet Set Willy - Ian Collier's version
Author: Ian M. Collier
Year: 1994
Language: English
Back in 1985 or 1986 Ian Collier created a version of JSW with a cheat selection screen at the start and four new rooms: "Where the Chapel should be" (47), "Behind the bar" (61), "The Playroom" (62) and "The room without a name" (63). The cheat selection screen (the "megatrainer") appears after the game has loaded. It allows the player to apply POKEs to fix three of the original critical bugs (there is no fix for the Banyan Tree problem), choose the number of lives, the number of items and the starting room, as well as choose among several options which either make the game easier to complete (infinite lives, not getting killed, keeping the collected items after getting killed, etc.) or modify the way it runs (e.g. change the tune or get rid of colours during pausing). The values can be chosen only once; they cannot be modified once the game has been restarted without being re-loaded.
Ian Collier's version was released on the internet in 1994.
A variant of Ian Collier's version of JSW surfaced on the web under the name Jet Set Willy: The Gaping Pit. The only difference is that the name of the room "We must perform a Quirkafleeg" (16) has been changed to "+++ The Gaping Pit +++". The file is hosted by Russ Juckes on his website; he is *not* the author of the new rooms, however.
The new rooms have been included in Jet Set Willy: The 2010 Megamix (and its first incarnation Jet Set Willy: The 2005 Megamix) (by Daniel Gromann and others, 2010 and 2005, respectively).
Number of edited rooms: 64
Number of rooms accessible without cheating: 64
Number of rooms which need to be visited to complete the game: 63
("Entrance to Hades" [06] should be omitted as entering it results in a multiple-death scenario.)
Number of items to collect: 96
(This number can be modified on the cheat selection screen.)
Completable without loss of life? NO
Lives which need to be sacrificed to complete the game: 1
(A life has to be sacrificed to collect the leftmost item in "Conservatory Roof" [43]).
This version of the game does not have an option to apply a fix for the Banyan Tree problem (such as one of the official Software Projects POKEs, which changes an Earth cell in the Banyan Tree to a Water cell, so that the tree is climbable). Therefore, the game cannot be completed unless "Under the Roof" (42) is chosen as the starting room in the cheat menu, which allows the player to reach the items in "Conservatory Roof" (43) without climbing the Banyan Tree.
Starting time: 7:00 am
Best documented completion time with no unnecessary loss of life: 8:06 am
