Manic Miner: The Buddha of Suburbia is the second MM remake gamma-released by Andrew Broad. The concept for the game is based on David Bowie's soundtrack album for the BBC2 adaptation of Hanif Kureishi's novel The Buddha of Suburbia. However, only the back ten rooms are based on David Bowie's album (a room for each track on the album), the first ten being a mix of Andrew's early MM experiments which he ultimately considered good enough to keep.
The game was originally written in 1994. Andrew hacked it slightly in 1998 to bring it up to his standards of that time and gamma-released it in April 1998. The Special Edition of the game was released in August 2003, with edited Miner Willy graphics, title-screen graphics, end-game colour attributes, playing area colour attributes, scrolly and in-game tune (the room data are identical to the original release).
In the Special Edition the player plays as Karim Amir - son of Haroon Amir, the Buddha of Suburbia.
The Special Edition completely supersedes the Original Edition.
Number of rooms: 20
Highest documented score:
- upon reaching the swordfish sign: 25,536 points;
- upon first re-entry into the first cavern: n/a.
(The air counter keeps resetting itself after the player has completed the final cavern, causing a constant increase in the score and making it impossible to re-enter the first cavern.)
