9. Manic Miner Mythologies: Eugene - Lord of the Bathroom

Author: Vidar Eriksen (Erix1)

Publisher: Manic Miner Technologies

Year: 1999

Language: English

Manic Miner Mythologies: Eugene - Lord of the Bathroom is the only known MM remake created by Vidar Eriksen (Erix1). As the author explains, "this time it's not Willy who gets to collect all the colour cycling items, but the most feared (and misunderstood) of all Manic Miner characters: Eugene! (From Eugene's Lair...)". The player has to "guide him through 16 levels of unspeakable 48Kb glory" in order to save the Earth from mad scientists who are developing "a new weapon so dangerous it makes the a-bomb look like a firecracker".

The game was gamma-released in May 1999. It makes a great use of graphics and colour, partly achieved by hacking the game engine. The game features, inter alia, 3D graphics in one room, a 'Jet Set Pac' room in which Willy's jump lasts until he hits the ceiling and he can fall without dying, and a new end-game sequence. There is no in-game music, as it was removed to make way for new code and graphics.

Number of rooms: 16

Highest documented score:

- upon reaching the swordfish sign: 25,865 points;

- upon first re-entry into the first cavern: 27,001 points.
