Manic Miner - Trick or Treat?
Author: Allan Turvey (Highrise)
Year: 2021
Language: English
Manic Miner - Trick or Treat? is a Halloween version of Manic Miner in which the player has to guide Miner Willy through the classic caverns using a real miner's lamp. The game needs to be played on a ULAplus-compatible machine, such as the Spectrum Next or Sizif-512 or compatible emulator (ULAplus is an enhanced video controller plug-in for the ZX Spectrum, developed by Andrew Owen and other core members of the ULAplus user group).
Manic Miner - Trick or Treat? was released in late October 2021 (for Halloween), available only to the author's paying Patreon supporters. An updated version was released on 4th November 2021, featuring two AY tunes adapted by Pedro Pimenta and the option to adjust the lamp beam by pressing "1" or "2" for wide or narrow. That version suffered from a critical bug which made it crash a few steps into "Attack of the Mutant Telephones". A completable, bug-fixed version was released on 14th December 2021, along with a special bonus version called the Silver Shamrock edition. The Silver Shamrock edition is about 50% faster, has a green lamp, and things that are not lit by the lamp are completely invisible, "making the whole thing suitable for the hardcore gamer". For Halloween 2022, Allan Turvey made both versions of the game freely available to everyone.
