Subject: Preferred file formats: 2. THE GAMES

(cont.)
This message would not be complete
without a discussion of file formats for the games
themselves:

- TAP: much preferred, as it should be useable on
any emulator, and people can take snapshots to avoid
the hassle of loading a TAP every time.

- SNA:
my preferred snapshot format, which SPECSAISIE
supports, as it is a fixed-length image of the registers
(the first 27 bytes) and RAM (16384-65535), so it's
very easy to perform surgery on.

- Z80:
MacSpectacle doesn't support Z80 v3 files, only v < 3.
Actually, MacSpectacle 1.9.7 claims to support Z80 v3
files, but I can't install that on my Mac because
everytime I try to expand the .sit file, it fails (damaged
archive). :-(

Please don't release games in any
other format, as MacSpectacle doesn't support
them.

The C program spconv can convert snapshots from one
file format to another, although it has a problem with
128K snapshots. e.g. Manic Miner games developed using
MMSE tend to be released as 128K Z80 files, which
spconv can't handle, but fortunately MacSpectacle can -
please don't release a 128K Z80 v3 file!!
;-)

More FAQ material, I think...
