Strangely enough,
I was thinking just last night of the possibility
of connecting a Spectrum to a PC or a Mac with a
cable, and transferring data between them directly! It
would save all that messing about with tapes (which I
can't do myself anyway, due to a lack of appropriate
equipment).
It would certainly be possible in principle, but
there are two major problems:
1. Where to get a
suitable cable to connect a Spectrum to another computer
for data transfer;
2. Writing a communication
protocol for the data transfer. I actually worked on a
PC-to-PC data transfer protocol as an undergraduate lab
exercise, but the basic send/receive primitives were
already implemented. For Spectrum<->PC transfer,
this would require writing send/receive primitives
both in Z80 machine code (using IN/OUT instructions,
no doubt), and - worse for me - in the machine code
of the PC!
In fact, I'm going to put this
suggestion to comp.sys.sinclair, to see if anyone there has
anything to suggest...
