Subject: Re: The pain of creation
"Or perhaps scatter items, guardians or whatever,
randomly throughout the game to begin with, and then write
the rooms around those (this idea is inspired by
typing JSW games into my real Spectrum - I type in the
guardian class table and the item table before I type in
the rooms). This kind of approach should also yield
some interesting rooms, I think!"
An
interesting aside: In the early stages of making W vs B, I
was experimenting with the SGE, and fouled up
horribly - namely I copied a block of guardians over the
object table. It was early on in the game, so not much
had to be done to repair the damage, but there was an
interesting development with the room "If I Was A Rich Man".
The objects were no longer in their original places,
but instead scattered all over the room, and liking
the configuration but not the waste of objects, I
replaced them all with fire blocks in the shape of
moneybags and built the room "Taxman" (after the George
Harrison song from Revolver) around them. Not one of the
best rooms in the game, but interesting nonetheless
One day I have a plan to build a 48k Willy game built
around an object arrangement created entirely by
randomly dropping sprites over the object table, but that
would be in the long distant future.
