2D!
I think 2D is best, but I would like to see a
*decent* 3D version of MM/JSW, too.
Isometric
3D
------------
There were some classic isometric 3D Spectrum games,
such as Knight Lore, Alien 8, Fairlight, Fairlight II,
Head Over Heels, and Rentakill Rita. I would love to
see (perhaps even write) a MM/JSW game as good as
they are.
There were some crap 3D games too,
though, which were basically glorified bird's-eye-view 2D
games (Molecule Man springs to mind, though it is
redeemed by the fact that it has an editor! :-) ). Sadly,
the very promising 3D Gamemaker only seems to be able
to generate games of this calibre (I played a game
someone had written using 3D Gamemaker, but have never
used it myself because I couldn't get it for my real
Spectrum, despite trying to order it).
Freescape
3D
------------
I've got 3D Construction Kit for my real Spectrum, for
writing freescape games (such as Castle Master). I was
heavily into 3DCK at the beginning of the nineties,
before MM/JSW took over. Five hours would go by like
five minutes! I wrote a 3DCK model of my house, and
started on one of the Computer Science building at
Manchester, but it hasn't been touched for at least five
years now.
If I had stuck with 3DCK, I was
planning to do a freescape version of MM and JSW. If I get
back into freescape editing in the future, it would
probably have to be on a modern computer, as 3DCK on the
Spectrum is slow, monochrome, and prone to crashing.
:-(
Commercial Willy games

I
must admit it's a temptation, as I'm facing
unemployment after finishing my PhD this year. But I would
have to decline for moral reasons - I would be guilty
of the sin of Simony if I sold Willy for money. I'll
just continue making free Spectrum games, and hope
that more people will download them rather than buy
commercial (I hate that word) games.
I wonder if
Jester Interactive will commit the sin of Simony by
trying to buy the rights to *our* Willy games? But I
wouldn't sell Broadsoft, even if I were broke and they
offered me a million pounds.

A very valid concern! I wonder if they're even
aware of us? "After a prolonged absence" suggests
not...
