Subject: Re: 3D
"someone offered to design a 3D version of willy
in this forum a good few months back, and we all
said 'no way pal!'."
Don't remember that.
Unless it was before I signed up, I would have been
right there with you decrying the 3D idea
"and
i'm inclined to *generally* stick by that. i think a
3d version of (specifically) the willy mansion would
be cool, for novelty value more than anything else,
but a new willy game in a 3d environment? naah, it
simply wouldn't be willy, IMO."
Which is what
I've been saying. Games like Willy have a lot of
"personality" if you like, so Willy is not Monty, and Monty is
not Willy. No doubt this is related to the fact that
they were produced by one or two people who could add
whatever they felt like, as opposed to the sprawling
design teams used today. You could easily disrupt that
personality if you made such an extreme leap.
I should
also perhaps add that I'm a massive devotee of Sonic,
having most of the 2D platform versions on various
emulators. I also have Sonic adventure on the Dreamcast, and
whilst it's good in itself, the merest whiff of the old
2D versions brings me back to the fact that I could
play those non-stop for hours, but SA bores the fecal
matter out of me very quickly. I couldn't bare for that
to happen to Willy.
In the end though it's
down to the market, and while I prefer 2D platformers
to even the most sophisticated 3D jobs any day, most
of the youth market (who as we all know represent
the *real* money) doesn't share my
views
"*happy to be proven wrong* :)"
We shall see. We
shall see
[Good God, haven't I got *any* excuse
to go outside today? :)]
