18 steps = 36 pixels.
Willy jumps to a height of two-and-a-half characters (20 pixels) from
the platform to his feet.
Willy loses one time-frame with every diagonal jump, compared to
walking that distance.
The trajectory of Willy's jump can best be seen by making his sprite
a
16x16-pixel square.

of 8 pixels, namely when he falls from a rope (e.g. in "The Taming of
Sméagol" in JSW:LOTR), or using the superjump poke (if he falls an
odd
number of pixels, he falls slap through the platforms! :-( ).
I think that a fall of 34 pixels (just over 4 characters) would kill
Willy, but I haven't tested this.
