Hi Phil / everyone!
i'm new to this group and wanted to say hi 2every1 :)

I'm 31 and have been playing MM/JSW on the Spectrum since they were first release (been a speccy owner since 83). I adore Miner Willy!
I sold my spectrum around 1990 to buy an Atari ST and then later moved onto the Macintosh in the mid-nineties - and am still a very happy Mac user!

Anyhow, i've got an awesome program called MacSpectacle and this fully supports the 48/128 Spectrum and so i'm playing all my faves all over again! It's superb and i've realised that i've missed playing these games for many wasted years now :-/ Current goals are to complete Chuckie Egg 2 and the 128K version of Saboteur 2. Wonderful games!

Before xmas, i was playing MM and was amazed that i could still remember the cheat code - 6031769 iirc. And the BugByte version is still my fave, got two original copies (juuuust incase i lost one! - commitment or just sad?!!) :) ....still can't get past the Warehouse level though arrgghhhh

I do prefer JSW though, like u said, it's the exploration and lack of restriction because u don't need to complete a screen b4 moving onto another. This is the reason i love Chuckie Egg2 also..

Due to moving house soon and a general lack of time atm, i havn't been able to try out any of these new JSW/MM games that you've talked about - 1xMM and 15xJSW. WOW there's some major games playing to do :-))) I'm just hoping they work on the Mac emulator!

Anyway, just wanted to say hello to everyone and let u all know that another mad Maria hating gamer has joined the group!
Time to log off now and do some work...

TTFN
Steve:-)

Although the games follow roughly the same concept (jump around,
collect items and exit), there are several differences as Andrew
listed in his post. I offer a few thoughts of my own:

It is possible to enjoy playing JSW without bothering to collect all
the items and complete it. It is fun just exploring and working out
the puzzles, etc. This is one of the benefits over MM. In MM if you
get stuck on a cavern, you have three options: carry on until you
complete the cavern, teleport to a different cavern, or play
something else.

On the other hand, I have yet to see a MM game that is impossible to
complete (barring contamination like the Three-Blocks Bug). Several
JSW games are impossible to complete. Whilst it is fun to explore
and collect as many items as you can, I like to be able to complete
the game if at all possible.

Because of the sheer number of Spectrum JSW games compared to
Spectrum MM games any Miner Willy fan will inevitably play more JSW
games. This doesn't mean that JSW games are better; they are more
popular.

I can't say which set of games I prefer - I like them both very
much! :-)

What I can say is that the original MM (Bug-Byte) and JSW are exempt
from any lists of best MM and JSW games. They are the originals -
they are the alpha - all that follow are derivative and there can be
no omega.

Phil
