* Babel Fish [ http://babelfish.altavista.com/ ]
* PROMT [ http://www.translate.ru/eng/srvurl.asp ]
Babel Fish can make something of http://www.bwc.by.ru/default.htm
but unfortunately doesn't seem to recognise the links on the left.
Machine-translation is a topic that I find fascinating and
entertaining; unfortunately it still doesn't have much to show for
all the research-grants it's been attracting since the 1950s.
e.g. (1) "Press 'Y' for Yes" -> "Taper 'Y' pour Oui"
e.g. (2) One English<->Russian translator apparently
translated "hydraulic ram" to Russian, and back to English
as "water sheep"! Round-trip translation is definitely not the way
to evaluate the quality of a translator...
You've just moved learning Russian a little higher up my list of
priorities! ;-) I taught myself Slovak last year - maybe Russian in
2005 if I'm not too busy. I'm a fan of Iroda Tulyaganova and Maria
Sharapova after all, and I have the advantage of my mother being a
former teacher of Russian.
