Subject: Manic Miner & JSW stuff.
Hi.
First a historical note about the web site. When Ross and I won the
JSW prize, we didn't get the champagne, or the helicopter flight.
Instead, we accepted a cash value equivalent. I did get to meet Mathew
Smith briefly, during a visit to Software Projects to discuss doing
some work for them. I don't know whether Ross ever met Mathew.
In the MSX versions of the games, there are cheats available. I can't
remember what it was for JSW (it may be the same), but for Manic
Miner, the following works:
Once the game is within a cavern, pause it by pressing w.
Now type either
xraytubei To get infinite lives.
xraytubec To be allowed to skip between caverns.
The enabled feature will show at the bottom of the screen.
Now press any motion key to resume.
Choose the desired cavern by pressing some combination of the 1 thru 5
keys and then, while they are pressed, pressing the 0 (zero) key.
The combination of keys are a binary number from 0 to 19 - 1 is the
one bit, 2 the two bit, 3 the four bit, 4 the eight bit and 5 the
sixteen bit.
There was also a cheat for JSW2 that I'm trying to remember, which
allowed infinite lives, a single step mode, and also the ability to
choose a room to go to.
The MSX version contained two additional rooms. The Maze, and the
Transmat Testing Bay. The latter is certainly mentioned in the
scrolling text at the start of the game.
The MSX versions were also released for a machine that I think was
called the Einstein, which used much the same hardware but had a
floppy disc drive. I contrived to vapourise one of this machine's
printed circuit tracks by accidentally shorting out two of the pins to
its printer port. The side effect of this was to change the voltages
on its video output which twice caused the television I was using to
die with a loud bang, sparks and smoke.
Unfortunately, the source for these MSX games has been lost. The tapes
on which it had been stored for 15 years proved no longer readable.
Cameron Else.
