How can anything ever be more than the sum of its parts?

The human brain.

The sum of the parts of a few pounds of grey goo. However, the
whole is a lot more than a few pounds of grey goo. It holds the
mind and opens up into the whole world of human creativity.

The human mind and consciousness cannot be contained in physical
matter. Rather, the human brain is an interface between the physical
body and the human soul, which is a spiritual entity beyond the
reach of the physical sciences.

"We are not human beings having an occasional spiritual experience;
rather, we are spiritual beings having a human experience."
[Colin Tipping]

"Luminous beings are we - not this crude matter!"
[Yoda]

Nothing can ever be more than the sum of its parts; however, it may
have an interface into a wider world - like a computer with access
to the Internet.
