I'm now thinking of trying to code up vertical conveyors (as well as
lifts) for my next JSW game _Afrikaan_ (which will be a 48K JSW
game).

I'm thinking of replacing ramps with vertical conveyors - a column
of a specified number of blocks, which take Willy two pixels either
up or down on each time-frame that he's standing on/in such a block.

Or, instead of having one ramp and one conveyor per room, I might
have two generic slots, each of which can either be ramp, horizontal
conveyor or vertical conveyor (as specified by Offset 214 or 218,
the LSB of which is already used to represent the direction -
setting any of the higher 7 bits has quirky effects including off-
and sticky conveyors).

Such a scheme would allow all of ramps, horizontal conveyors and
vertical conveyors in the game, but only two of them in each room.
So you could have a '/' and a '\' in the same room, or two conveyors
of different directions, or any arbitrary pair of these objects.

I wouldn't say vertical conveyors are going to be easy to code.
I'll have to work on my understanding of how Willy is detected to
be standing on something - or at the very bottom of a block, if
up-conveyors are to work properly. Vertical conveyors seem like the
logical offspring of horizontal conveyors and ramps...
