message. is it simply a case of the theme tune at the
beginning being very long, or am i doing something wrong?

The tune is just very long (I think it's the
minutes long).
If you want to change it, download
Ian Collier's music-editing programs
from
ftp://ftp.nvg.unit.no/pub/sinclair/misc/musicfiles.zip
, convert them from the obsolete XZX 1.0 format
into something your emulator can read, and edit the
.TUN files.
