Subject: The mother of all JSW ideas
Ok, the other day I had a brainflash. This is a game I would need some
help with from a programmer, as it would require an extension to the
main game engine, probably in the form of a patch vector present in
every room.
The idea is inspired from Metroid. Basically the player has to collect
powerups to 'unlock' different 'skills'. First of all you can't jump,
so you are restricted to walking on ramps until you find the Jump
Powerup, and so on...
Skills can be progressively unlocked, creating a situation where
whether you can continue in a given direction is dependant upon the
terrain and your powerup status.
The ideas for powerups I had are:
1) Jumping
2) Collecting Items
3) Fall any height
4) ... And here's the kicker... Quirky features LEFT. Before this is
taken, the POKEs which were posted to this club to disable QF's on the
left side are disabled. So when you take this you can start using the
QF puzzles to get to new places. THEN...
5) Quirky features RIGHT! Think of all the promised lands this would
create!
We could then go on to do
6) Not affected by conveyors
and possibly
7) A certain killer block type (say, block no 15 in the game) becomes
passable.
8) Portals, previously not working, work
9) Time limit freezes, so rooms where the time limit prohibited you
from taking certain exits, can be revisited and those exits finally taken.
More effects could be achieved through clever programming, but these
are the ones I think would need less special code and more just
expoliting the engine as it stands.
This is a game that clearly isn't going to come into existance soon,
but if eventually I do get a chance to do it, I think it will be a
very interesting project.
