Subject: Re: Maria on Tour
I played _Maria on Tour_ for about ten minutes, and I must admit I'm
impressed. I have to give huge credit to John Elliott for creating the
JSW64 game-engines, of course, but this looks like a worthy first new
JSW64 game.
As the first whole new game to use JSW64, it's certainly something
special in terms of graphics, and use of special features such as
crumbling floors and Rigor Mortis. I'm sure I will struggle to compete
in the graphical department when I start writing JSW64 games!
The many different cell-classes make it much harder to analyse a room
by process of elimination - you can't, for example, look at a wall and
know that it couldn't be concealing a secret exit because all six cell-
types (Air, Water, Earth, Fire, Ramp and Conveyor) are accounted for.
"Mole Hill" [17] strikes me a particularly attractive room in
aesthetic terms, showing that a simple iconic room can be just as
pleasing in its own way as an intricate array of quirky features where
every single character-square is of playing-significance.
However, my first go ended with an infinite-death scenario (falling
too far) in "MOLE VILLAGE!" [47] when I walked in from the left.
Oh - and the title-screen picture looks great too! :-)
