Donkey Kong surfaced in 1981 and Miner 2049'er in 1982. Manic Miner
appeared in 1983, taking ideas from both games (Mathew Smith has been
quoted on this several times), followed by Jet Set Willy in 1984. The
sequel to Miner 2049'er, Bounty Bob Strikes Back was released in
1985. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Willy was as popular
in the US and Japan as it was in Britain (and some other European
countries). I think in all probability, you'll get nothing but a
blank stare if you mention a Willy game to an American (of any age)
whereas most people on both sides of the Atlantic have heard of
Donkey Kong and Mario.
I had my first computer, a Spectrum 48K when it was first released in
1982. Manic Miner was one of the first games I ever played. Here I
am, now aged 33, with multiple shelves adorning 2 of the rooms in my
bedroom, all taken up by hundreds of games (well ok, pc games...). I
have more controllers than I know what to do with, including a 2-
player X-Arcade. Do I qualify as a "real" gamer? (note however, that
I have *never* owned a console, as my computers have always been game
machines as far as I'm concerned)
;)
