Subject: JSW II: Manic Miner (a MM-to-JSW2 conversion)

I have just uploaded a JSW II game containing the Manic Miner
caverns - imported via John Elliott's XML file-format, with some
manual tweaks to make it item-completable (though not without
sacrificing a life).

It is a beta-version and an experimental prototype, so please don't
upload it to any websites outside this Group. I might gamma-release
it as part of the Toy box-set - along with a JSW1-to-JSW2
conversion, and conversions of JSW II to MM (7 volumes), JSW48 (3
volumes), JSW128 (1 volume) and JSW64 (2 volumes).

Comments on JSWED's JSW II import-algorithm:

* Cell-graphics start breaking down in "Skylab Landing Bay" [13],
where the item-graphic is the Water-pattern from The Off Licence.
This particular graphic is also used for Water and Item in "The
Bank" [14], and Earth, Fire and Item in "The Sixteenth Cavern" [15].
Subsequent rooms' cell-graphics tend to resort to those of Central
Cavern.

* JSWED should import Crumbly cells as Ramp /, along with the
Crumbly cell-graphic.

* JSWED does not import sprites correctly to a JSW II game. When
importing MM into JSW II, I get only 3 frames of the robot in
Central Cavern (#EB81-EBE0) and 5 frames of the penguin from The
Cold Room (#EBE1-EC80). Sprites in The Menagerie onwards appear
blank in JSWED, and as random pixels when playing.

* JSWED should import Eugenes, Kong-Beasts and Skylabs as vertical
guardians.

I'll probably redo JSW2:MM from scratch when I have a better import-
algorithm. It only took me this evening to knock up this prototype.

Further comments on JSWED's JSW II editor:

* When selecting cell-graphics for a JSW II room, JSWED should not
colour white ink cyan in the cell-graphic under the cursor, because
the user might be looking for a white cell-graphic.

* JSWED could assist the search for a suitable cell-graphic by
allowing the user to sketch the pixel-pattern and/or colour-
attribute sought, and present the user with a list of cell-graphics
sorted in order of similarity to that sketch.

* JSWED should allow the user to reorder the cell-graphics in memory
(automatically adjusting any pointers to these cell-graphics in
existing rooms).

* JSWED should be able to tell the user which rooms use a given cell-
graphic, and visually mark cell-graphics not used in any room.

JSW II has quirky features too! :-)

* You can jump straight up on the leftmost cell of a left-conveyor.

* Moving in a field of Ramp-cells (see "The Vat") causes some
unexpected interactions with other cell-types.

P.S. I meant to update my website this evening, but got a little
sidetracked as you can see! ;-)
