Subject: Completing "Maria vs. Some Bastards"
I would like to ask for help from the Group with the problem of
completing "Maria vs. Some Bastards".
The startup screen allows the player to choose one of the three modes
of the game: Easy, Normal or Hard (Normal being the default mode).
In the Easy mode, according to the message which shows in the opening
room, you need to collect 120 items.
In the Normal mode, you need to collect 240 items.
In the Hard mode, you need to collect 246 items.
The number of items necessary to collect is set by POKing the address
39478 (you can see it if you enter the BASIC loader).
On the startup screen, you can also activate a cheat menu by
pressing "c". Then if you press "5", switching the "one item to
collect" feature on, you need to collect just 1 item in order to
finish the game. This happens by POKE 39478,1, just as with the above
modes.
The "one item to collect" feature works well; with one item
collected "Maria" disappears at the top-left of the room "Some
guardians" (38) and you can start a toilet-run which ends in the
room "Held captive" (50).
Okay, now my problem is this: while playing in the Hard mode, I have
collected 251 items, and "Maria" still doesn't disappear. I tried
entering "Some guardians" both with 251 items collected and with 246
items collected (I thought maybe the number must be exact), but she
is still there.
I don't understand it. Does it mean I have to collect 256 items after
all, even though the value of 39478 IS 246?
The items I haven't been able to collect are:
- the rightmost item in the room "The old house" (17);
- the rightmost item in the room "Stinking sewer" (27);
in both cases I don't know how to reach them.
- three items which I can't see in JSWED anywhere, and I suspect they
must be in a room invisible in JSWED, the problem being similar to
the one Andrew Broad discussed in message # 4163, concerning the beta
version of Sendy's "Role Reversal".
One thought I had was that perhaps my main problem had something to
do with some (exactly: 5) of the items being extra lives you can gain
while progressing along the game. I thought maybe they didn't count
towards the total item count, being special cases? But even with
that, I have already 246 items collected (246 regular ones plus 5
extra lives), so why doesn't "Maria" disappear?
Any help on this one, anyone?
Daniel
