Subject: Flash Manic Miner
Since the online Flash Manic Miner (www.darnkitty.com/manic/) has
been discussed in the Group (even though it's not a Spectrum game),
let me share my joy of just having played the game of my life :-) .
Less than an hour ago I finished playing a game in which I reached
Cavern 69 and 135199 points. It went like this:
After several previous attempts during the day and some very careful
playing, I reached Cavern 43 ("Killer Birds") with no loss of life.
I lost one life during the first attempt to pass it. I defeated the
Killer Birds on the second attempt and I went on. I discovered that
the caverns in the third set are the same as caverns in the second
set (I had actually anticipated it intuitively). So I went on rather
easily, but very carefully - I wanted to reach the end of the third
set. I lost my second life in Cavern 56 (wrongly called "The Thirty-
sixth Cavern" - as in the second set). I managed to complete the
third set of caverns, only to discover that the fourth set is
identical to the third one - Cavern 61 is called "Central Cavern
III" (it should be "IV" already) and so on. So Cavern 63 is
again "Killer Birds" - and I passed it on my first attempt, which
gave me particular satisfaction. Then I went on, until I choked in
Cavern 69 with 135199 points to my nickname.
This achievement has liberated me from the obsession of playing
Flash Manic Miner and I hope that now I will be able to go back to
dealing with MM/JSW games for the Spectrum. In Flash Manic Miner
there are no more new caverns to discover, because the fourth set of
caverns is the same as the third one, and I am convinced that the
fifth one will be the same again, and so on, infinitely. So setting
new high scores would just involve becoming perfect in one well-
known set of caverns, avoiding mistakes. There's little added value
to it.
A note to Andrew: after you have "processed" the newly-edited
caverns of the second set (which means caverns up to 31, plus
possibly the item-enhanced Cavern 34), the only other novelty left
in Flash MM will be "Killer Birds" (Cavern 43, 63 and so on). So,
taking into account the problem of Flash MM having more than 256
items (and also having no visible ending...), perhaps in the
Spectrum conversion you might consider including "Killer Birds"
somewhere (it's an interesting and difficult cavern - a must to
include), but without including the whole third set of caverns,
which - with the exception of "KB" and the room-names of caverns 41
and 42 - is the same as the second set.
