Subject: I dreamed a Manic Miner room, and I wrote it!
On Tuesday morning, I dreamed that I was editing a Manic Miner game, and had a very vivid image of a room with graphics similar to "Central Cavern"! So almost as soon as I woke up, I used John Elliott's JSWED to bring the room into reality! :-)
This was the second time that I have dreamed of a new Manic Miner room vividly enough actually to write it. The first was on the morning of 17th February 1999, and it became the first room of my MM game _Ma jolie_.
Perhaps "Dream of 27th July 2010" will be the start of another full MM game, although I don't yet have a game-title or any idea of when I might finish it, seeing as I have virtually no time for MM/JSW for the foreseeable future (I'm already up to September 2011 in terms of plans that take priority over MM/JSW, and I expect this outlook to keep getting worse before it starts to get better).
What I remember of the new room from my dream:
* Willy started at the top-right, with Earth-cells above and to the right of him, rather like the top-right of "Amoebatrons' Revenge".
* The top third of the screen consisted of a recurring pattern of Earth-cells, Conveyor-cells and Air-cells: a puzzle to cross from right to left.
* At the top-left of the screen, Willy had to jump down by clipping his head against an overhead Earth-cell (which behaved like the ones in Jet Set Willy rather than the ones in Manic Miner).
* The bottom row was sort of green marshland consisting of Crumbly and Fire-cells, and there was a conveyor-animation (but no Conveyor-cells) in the rightmost third of the bottom row.
* Occupying the bottom-central ninth of the screen was a sort of bunker consisting of an array of Crumbly cells enclosed within a perimeter of Earth-cells. These Crumbly cells looked like the ones in "The Warehouse".
* The portal was in the bottom-right corner of the bunker, with a column of Earth-cells separating it from the main area of the bunker. The top two rows of Crumbly cells extended to form an opening at the top of this inner wall.
* The main area of the bunker had at least four rows of Crumbly cells below the top row of Earth-cells, with the Manic-Mining robot from "Central Cavern" patrolling the third and fourth rows (thus the player had to walk directly above the robot to get to the portal). Just before I woke up, I was wondering how to stop the robot colliding with the INK-pixels of the Crumbly cells...
I have just uploaded "Dream of 27th July 2010" to the Files section of this Group, containing my implementation of the room in a new 48K Manic Miner game, and detailed notes on how I turned the dream described above into a real MM room.
It's just a beta-release, so please do not spread it outside this Group.
