N.B. The corruption of the player's sprite in Mount Doom only appears to take place once all the items have been collected.


And in fact, it occurs at precisely the time when Gollum collects the final item in the game (causing the Sauron's Eye [formerly Maria] to disappear.  i.e. the onset of Game Mode 1).
To be precise, the corruption manifests itself as a single infilled pixel, to the right of Willy's rightmost foot - corresponding to Bit 0 of the next byte in the display file along from Willy's bottom-right graphic byte.  This shifts to Bit 1 when Willy is on the toilet-run (or should that be Frodo on the fire-run?), so it is the value of the Game Mode that is interpreted as the pixel to be infilled!
Finally, I can confirm that editing the value of the address #95BC from '68' to '5F' prevents the bug from occurring (because it corrects the subroutine entry point, as outlined in my previous message).
