32. JSW: The Sun Is No Longer Producing Heat

Also known as: JSW: TSINLPH

Author: Nick Aldridge

Year: 2002

Language: English

JSW: The Sun Is No Longer Producing Heat was the fourth of five JSW games created by Nick Aldridge between 2000 and 2003. It was announced as being the author's "last" game. Nevertheless, it was followed by Mr Top Hat.

GAME PREMISE: After all Willy's adventures, after all the countless remakes and hacks, the end of the sun's long life has arrived. Soon it will die and explode, engulfing the earth and destroying all life. Only Willy can save the planet, by finding 255 objects that will somehow, mysteriously, reignite the sun.

The author leaves some doubt as to whether this scenario is literal or merely a metaphor. Is the sun truly on the brink of extinction, or is there a deeper issue plaguing Willy? Can he overcome his sadness and find happiness once more?

Nick advertised the game on his website as featuring "brand new guardian sprites, a moodier Willy, 'Warp' rooms, a storyline that explains what the other games were about (but only just), at least 4 half-new ideas and a castle". The game indeed has some interesting technical elements, like the room with the highest number of items ever: "TTiiiimmesstttrrrreettccchhh"" (46), with 178 items to collect, all at the same location (so that the player only sees one item), which slows the game down noticeably, or a platform created by an invalid arrow in the room "This shouldn't happen" (09).

Number of edited rooms: 61

Number of rooms accessible without cheating: 59

(The rooms "drat!" [29] and "There goes the PG rating!" [37] are accessible only using the Writetyper cheat and do not need to be accessed to complete the game.)

Number of rooms which need to be visited to complete the game: 50

(The following rooms can be omitted: "The zoom tube" [47], "The zoom tuber" [48], "The zoom tubest" [49], "The is yellow. So what?" [54], "pointless" [56], "utterly pointless" [57], "tedious" [58], "are you listening to me?" [59] and "why not?" [60].)

Number of items to collect: 255

Bugfix needed after original release? NO
