Versions and minor mods of the original Jet Set Willy

Jet Set Willy: The Storm Warning Mix

Authors: Russ Juckes and Darren Salt

Year: 1999/2018

Language: English

Jet Set Willy: The Storm Warning Mix is a version of JSW going back to 1999, featuring the official Software Projects bug fixes and the "April Showers" room (47) printed in Your Spectrum magazine in 1985.

The files of this version that were available on the internet prior to 2018 were not really different from the April Showers version. The only difference in the range of addresses #8000-#FFFF was that the original Tandy code at #FEBB - #FED3, which reads "(C) Copyright 1982 by LSI", was modified to read "RUSS J & DARREN S - JSW! " in the Storm Warning Mix version.

The files described above can still be downloaded from the old Jet Set Willy Remakes website (the file "JSWAPRIL.SNA" inside "jsw-stormwarningmix.zip"), from the page of the original Jet Set Willy on the World of Spectrum (the file "JetSetWilly(StormWarningMix).z80" in the "Additional Files" section) or from old versions of Russ Juckes' We Must Perform A Quirkafleeg! website (e.g. from its 2016 snapshot saved on The Wayback Machine - the file "JSWAPRIL.SNA" inside "april.zip").

In 2018, Russ Juckes published a new version of The Storm Warning Mix, which adds fixes for the bugs and quirks outlined by Richard Dymond (SkoolKid) in his complete Jet Set Willy RAM disassembly. These include fixes for corrupt conveyors, the auto-collection of the item in "Swimming Pool" (31), the double location of the item in "The Beach" (58), the guardian "Halo" effect on bright backgrounds and using ropes to jump through the ceiling when normally prohibited.

The updated version was released as a SNA snapshot and can be downloaded from the current version of Russ's website. However, it suffers from a critical bug: since the colour attributes of the conveyor in "The Nightmare Room" (29) were changed to be the same as those of the Water cells, all Water cells became left conveyors. This makes the room impassable at the upper level and the item there uncollectable. A bug-fixed version in TAP and TZX format, prepared with the inspiration from and involvement of Richard Hallas, is offered for download below. The information which follows pertains to this fixed, completable version.

Number of edited rooms: 61

Number of rooms accessible without cheating: 61

Number of rooms which need to be visited to complete the game: 60

("Entrance to Hades" [06] should be omitted as entering it results in a multiple-death scenario.)

Number of items to collect: 83

Completable without loss of life? NO

Lives which need to be sacrificed to complete the game: 1

(A life has to be sacrificed to collect the leftmost item in "Conservatory Roof" [43]).

Starting time: 7:00 am

Best documented completion time with no unnecessary loss of life: 8:00 am
