Well I do host the
original Time Hole on my website. Should the new version
replace the old, or is it a Special Edition, which should
be added to the list rather than replaced? (like The
Continuing Adventures - Special Edition). Where do you draw
the line between a new revision, a new version, and a
new game?
Have you upgraded The Time Hole to
JSW128 v0.04 hacklevel 7? (JSW128 v0.03 hacklevel 6 was
the latest version of JSW128 at the time The Time
Hole was originally released).
I should remind
every JSW128 author to make sure that they're basing
their new games on v0.04 hacklevel 7.

Upgrading to a new version is a
much quicker task than typing in a game from scratch,
because I just use SPECSAISIE Compare to pinpoint the
changes. This month I will upgrade JSW128 to v0.04
hacklevel 7 on my Spectrum, and also upgrade The Time
Hole.
SPECSAISIE Compare also saves effort on typing in games from
scratch, because comparing them to the original
MM/JSW/JSW128 (or whatever game the author may have started
from) reveals some intervals of memory that are
unchanged. For example, Monstrum! is identical to the
original JSW from 35594 to 40063.
I sometimes have
a problem when typing in snapshots that were saved
with the game running, because some of the addresses
which are only supposed to change at runtime have
changed. The worst offender is Utility Cubicles, where the
screen flickers if you type it in as is. I narrowed it
down to a 256-byte buffer somewhere between 33024 and
33791 (I don't have the exact addresses to hand :-( ),
which appears to serve as some sort of lookup table
related to guardian positions and collision detection. I
cured the problem by putting the original JSW contents
of the offending address range back in.

Give you time to put Monstrum! in
My current
plan for typing into my real Spectrum is:
-
December 2000: Monstrum! and upgrading JSW128 to v0.04
hacklevel 7, and upgrading The Time Hole;
- January
2001: A Bulgarian Requiem
- February 2001: JSW 1-1
(appropriate to type in the game with the fewest changes in
the shortest month! ;-) )
- March/April/May 2001:
where's woody (unless someone else releases a game first
- Philip Bee's JSW(again) could pop out any day now
:-) )
