Subject: Game Over for Andrew ':-(
I regret to announce my immediate and permanent retirement from the
world of Spectrum computing.
I had to lay my real Spectrum to rest today, after the motor in its
Datacorder finally burned out, meaning that I can no longer access
the data on my Spectrum-tapes. A Spectrum +2 cannot take input from
an external tape-recorder, and there's no prospect of getting such an
obsolete machine fixed. A Spectrum without loading and saving is
nothing more than a mathom.
I have thus lost all the work I had done on Party Willy since the
conversion to emulator-format of JSW:MM (which in truth was not more
than a few hours of editing, and had not been touched since December
1999), and the one room I had made for Manic Miner: Allana Truman so
far. These two projects are therefore cancelled, along with all of my
other future games.
For the record, I was typing in Still Stealin' when the Play, Wind
and Rewind buttons on my Datacorder suddenly stopped functioning. I
had just typed in Room 53, but had only played Rooms 0-31. It was
shaping up to be a very promising game.
My Spectrum has brought me a lot of joy over the last fifteen years,
and particularly Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy over the last five. I
want to thank all my fellow authors for sharing in this, and wish
them all the best for the future.
