WOW!!!
I'm amazed :-/ seems I have been making life difficult from myself ALL these years, but that's the way I have always done the vat. The way on the clip seems more logical
I think I'm going 2 cry sob sob, going 2 give it a try on the 3510 and see how I get on :-)
P.s what was that level being played on I like the background, if I go 2 the site can I view any more clips so that I can compare how I have been clocking them?

It's probably just you! The collision detection in the game (apart from
the MIDP2.0 versions, which aren't yet released) is bounds based and
not pixel based - I've not noticed it as a problem. There's a clip of
that level in action here:
