It can't at the moment; but the source code has all the bits, so it
should just be a matter of pulling them together.

I have to learn more about the PNG format. Could someone point to
some useful information about it on the Web?

http://www.libpng.org/pub/png

JSWED uses it rather than GIF because until recently, GIF was
patent-encumbered.
