Subject: Maria on Tour - Daniel's first review
I had a go at "Maria on Tour" yesterday and I must say I am truly
impressed with the possibilities offered by the JSW64 game engine.
This does look like a beginning of a new era in JSW designing, with
all the new features that were unavailable until the creation of
JSW64, or available in Manic Miner only. Thanks a lot, John, for
creating JSW64 engine, and thanks a lot, DrUnKeN mAsTeR!!!, for
creating the first new JSW64 game! :-)
I have played "Maria on Tour" without applying any POKEs, but saving
snapshots and going back every time I lost a life. My ambition was to
see if I could finish it "without" losing a life. However, I think
it's impossible at this point, because there seems to be a critical
bug in the room "The Scumbags lost Girocheques" - when you enter it
after finishing "Order within Caos" there is an immediate infinite
death scenario. I am not sure if I did something wrong, or if it is a
bug indeed - DrUnKeN mAsTeR!!!, would you look into it?
Apart from this, I was VERY impressed with the graphics I had seen so
far and with the new possibilities offered by the game engine. I
liked "The Back Door" a lot it's a very good idea to have the
guardian blocking the exit. I admired the graphics and the atmosphere
of the sequence of rooms following falling down into darkness and
into "MOLE HOLE". Just like Andrew, I believe that "MOLE HILL" is a
very attractive room in aesthetic terms. And I liked the idea of
entering Miner Willy's house and coming out of it.
DrUnKeN mAsTeR!!!, it /is/ possible to leave the first screen
called "MOLE VILLAGE!" to the right. There is a nasty, unjustified
infinite-death scenario there (which apparently ended Andrew's first
go), but if you jump, it is possible to avoid.
The Manic Miner sequence is very nice, too, it's a strange feeling to
be playing a Manic Miner game after entering it from Jet Set Willy :-
) .
OK, so these are my first impressions :-) . Good job, DrUnKeN
mAsTeR!!!
Daniel
