I'm guessing that's because MicroEmulator isn't a full or correct
implementation of MIDP2.0. If you're running on Windows you might as
well stick with Sun's own Wireless Tookkit.

Does the ZXPlay emulate sound? It's possible your MIDP1.0 phone
doesn't support the (optional) multimedia support (MMAPI).

I don't think you'll find a phone that has a full Java implementation
capable of running applets, and I don't think you're going to have
much luck with any of the J2ME emulators (at least at a playable
speed, or with sound).

Your best bet is with the Symbian emulators, which should at least be
able to run at the full framerate. Even the old Nokia Series 60 phones
(like the N-Gage, which can be picked up quite cheaply) will run
emulators such as ZXBoy.
