Subject: "Dreams of Willy" - technical help needed!
The TAP file of Beta version 1 of Dreams of Willy, which can be downloaded here, has the following problem. It apparently uses the Hacklevel 4 JSW128 game engine. When loaded into JSWED 2.3.7 or 2.2.9, it is upgraded from HL4 to HL5 and then from HL8 to HL9 (according to the messages shown by JSWED). However, when the file is saved and then loaded again into JSWED, the update from HL4 to HL5 happens again,
I have tried loading and saving the file in four versions of JSWED: 2.0.3, 2.2.3, 2.2.9 and 2.3.7, with the same result*. The update from HL4 to HL5 is *never* saved, and it happens every time when a saved file is loaded into JSWED.
* (of course with version 2.0.3 the update from HL8 to HL9 does not happen for an obvious chronological reason).
I have tried fiddling with various options, such as saving the file as SNA, Z80 or +3DOS in JSWED, saving it as Z80 in Spectaculator and then loading it into JSWED, disabling "Adjacent ropes patch (old)", which for some reason seemed suspicious to me and so on - to no avail. The update from HL4 to HL5 happens every time the game is loaded into JSWED.
I have also tried converting it to JSW64 and noticed that the conversion is faulty - judging by the few rooms I glanced at in JSWED apparently the item table and some of the guardian sprites are not converted properly (there may be other issues, I did not investigate the problem at length).
During my playtest I did not notice any problems arising from the game being HL4. However, before Prophet proceeds to prepare the gamma release of Dreams of Willy, it would be good to solve the problem and have the file upgraded to HL9 cleanly.
So, a cry for help goes out to John Elliott with the hope that it will be an interesting challenge for you, John, to find out what the problem is (if you don't know it instantly, of course)!
It will be very appreciated if you could either tell us what to do with the file, if the problem can be solved without any special tools (e.g. in JSWED), or fix the file yourself and make it available for download somewhere, or send it by e-mail. Thanks in advance for your help! ![]()
