More accurately, the top pixel-row of the Crumbly cell upon which Willy is standing, is overwritten [temporarily; for as long as Willy is standing on it] by the colour-attribute byte of the current cavern's Air cells.
Of course, that equates to the graphic byte being cleared iff the Air cells have a colour-attribute value of 00 (Black INK on Black PAPER, non-Bright and non-Flashing). Which is the case for most caverns, but not all!
