Andrew wrote, in his MM Room Format webpage, in relation to what happens when Willy goes off the top/bottom of a cavern in Manic Miner:

However, whilst that is the likely outcome, it isn't always the case - the exact nature of the corruption of Room 8's code depends on Willy's precise x-coordinate and animation-frame when he transcends the top/bottom of a cavern!


It's still a very dangerous thing to facilitate in a game, though!  Fortunately, I've identified a fix that prevents the corruption in either variant of MM (see message 7015).
