Subject: Re: Guardian corruption / weird rope bug in UMM
Some more observations:
If I open the file in which the corruption takes place (upon starting the game up, doing nothing and waiting for one life to expire, whereupon the corruption/weird rope/teleport upwards takes place once the 'DIE MORTAL' lettering disappears) - but then pause and unpause the game (and do nothing else - use the '1' key to unpause so that no movement of Willy takes place) - then the bug doesn't occur.
Using the movement keys doesn't seem to prevent the bug from taking place. I established earlier that turning the music off stops the bug, so it seems to be the row of keys A-ENTER that have that effect, rather than the status of the music as such. EDIT: Although turning the music off in one game and abandoning it, then starting the next game so that the music defaults to off, then the bug doesn't occur even if I don't press any keys at all during the whole game.
So in summary, the bug only occurs if the in-game music is playing AND you don't press any of the keys A-ENTER during the course of the game.
Anyway, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get to the bottom of this. Based on the fact that it doesn't seem to occur in SPIN [except if I load up a snapshot from QAOP, in which the corruption had already occurred prior to taking the snap], it might be a quirk of the QAOP online Spectrum emulator that I've been using. Rather than anything rational that I might be able to observe by disassembling the game code.
