"well, it seems to have worked. am i right in
assuming you have the whole of jsw2, as well as the manic
miner screens, all crammed into one game?"

Not
quite. The game engine is the same in both cases, it
just loads different sets of sprites/room
descriptions. It'd be lovely if they'd both fit in together but
given that both games have something like 80K worth of
sprites, you'd need one hell of a compression system to
fit everything else in as well.

"yeah, but i
suppose i've made enough of these kinds of screens in
jsw128 so it will be quite interesting to work to new
limitations."

It's not really a limitation, as such. Of course
planning games will be somewhat more difficult as you
can't be sure how many different screens you can fit.
Still, it'll give you something to keep you on your
toes. :-)

"as for alternative room compression,
the only one i can think of involves measuring the
repetition of a block, reading across the screen as per
text. so you have the block type, followed by the
amount of times it's repeated. "

Yes, that is
sort of what the original JSW2 does. Although the
increased number of block types supported by jsw+ makes
that less efficient imo. Still, if you aren't using
them all it could work, I suppose...
