I think you're doing something wrong. HEXPAT needs to be run from
the command line, passing filenames as arguments. Put HEXPAT, the .HEX
files and JSW in a directory together. Then open a command prompt, CD
to that directory, and type the appropriate HEXPAT command.

It sounds like the sort of thing that could be done with the patch
vector system. The problem then would be getting some sort of working
patch mamager into JSWED. It actually needs quite a sophisticated
linking loader, which could combine patches and move them about in
memory.
If you only wanted the effect for some rooms, you wouldn't need the
upside-down death screen or title screen, would you? That gets rid of
most of the complexity straight off.
